Grooming Clinic: Part 3: The Basics

Know your skin's daily grooming routine

Men deserve more than just a morning shave ritual. This is what every self-conscious man should have in his skin care kit for his daily grooming routine:

  1. a cleanser (or face wash)
  2. a toner
  3. an exfoliator (or face scrub)
  4. a day moisturiser
  5. a night moisturiser
  6. a sunscreen

CLEANSE

Pollution, the grime of everyday living and the sweat of exercise or a busy train all combine to block the pores of your skin, stopping it breathing and revitalising.

Why?
Essential to remove impurities such as built-up dirt, excess oils and environmental pollution. Effective cleansing is essential to keeping your skin looking fresh and healthy and to avoid blemishes, blackheads and oily shine.

When?
This should be done everyday, once in the morning and once at night. Just lather up the face, massage and rinse with warm water.

How?
Lather on a wet face and risen with warm water.

TONE

Simply add perfection to your daily cleansing ritual.

Why?
It serves to hydrate, revitalise, soothe and balance the pH of the skin.  It literally relaxes and tones the pores preparing them to more effectively receive the benefits of the moisturiser.

When?
Used after cleansing the skin, the toner offers additional deep cleansing of the pores.  Toners can also be used throughout the day to refresh the skin while eliminating environmental toxins.

How?
Just spray or apply with cotton wool to the face and neck without rinsing. Do not tone if you are about to exfoliate.

EXFOLIATE

Every now and again, your skin needs a good workout.

Why?
Important to remove dead skin cells and unclog pores, stop in-grown hairs and regenerate the skin. It allows your skin to 'breathe' and revitalises it. It is equally important to do this without using any harsh chemical based products.

When?
Exfoliating should only be done two or three times a week, depending on your skin type.

How?
Simply apply exfoliating scrub after cleansing, gently rubbing onto wet face and neck in a circular motion avoiding eye area before rinsing with warm water. Best done under the shower!

MOISTURISE

Urban living and hectic lifestyles put strain on your skin.

Why?
Moisturising helps to hydrate the skin and is essential to replace lost moisture and to keep the skin soft and elastic. Urban living and hectic lifestyles put strain on your skin, so it is essential to nourish and protect it.

When?
It is best to use a light moisturiser in the day to maximise hydration and a richer night cream to revitalise and repair.

How?
Apply to freshly cleansed face and neck until absorbed.

PROTECT

It is essential to use a quality sunscreen with at least an SPF15 to disarm UV and free radicals.

Why?
It is important to protect your skin against sunlight and the damaging effects of UVB rays (causing sunburns) and UVA radiation (main cause of premature skin aging). A good sunscreen also keeps skin moist and maintains its elasticity and smoothness.

When?
Whenever sun exposure is expected.

How?
To get the maximum protection, it is best to apply to the face and body at least 15 minutes before exposure to the sun and repeat frequently.
